Many years ago steers were four or five years old at slaughter, where as today most steers reach only fourteen to sixteen months of age in order to bulk up a steer to slaughtering size in this amount of time, it takes a large amount of protein supplements, corn, antibiotics, and other drugs, including growth hormones. Many people prefer the natural progression of things and think grass-fed beef is ecologically and ethically better than livestock that is raised in a feedlot. However, there are still those that say grain-fed cattle are tastier than grass-fed. Some just say beef is beef. Wherever your opinion lies get educated on what you're putting into your body.
